Real CIA Manipulation Techniques That Might Help You Someday
Every day, someone is trying to get something out of you. Your boss wants extra hours. Your landlord wants a higher rent. A salesperson wants your signature. The people who do this most effectively aren’t con artists — they’re trained intelligence officers, and their methods are surprisingly simple. The CIA and FBI don’t rely on gadgets or threats; they rely on an understanding of how human beings are wired. Learning those methods does two things at once: it makes you harder to manipulate, and it makes you far better at getting what you want. Here are six techniques used in real intelligence work, and how to use them in ordinary life.
Elicitation — Getting Information Without Asking For It

This is the single most useful skill in intelligence work. Instead of asking a direct question, an agent makes a statement and lets the other person correct them. “I heard they’re shutting the whole department down” gets you far more than “is the department shutting down?” People love correcting others. They also love showing off what they know. Say something slightly wrong, act mildly uninformed, and watch the information pour out.
