5 Christmas Traditions That Are Actually Terrifying
Christmas is supposed to be twinkling lights, warm cocoa, and wholesome family moments. But if you dig into the folklore behind some of the world’s most beloved holiday traditions, you’ll find monsters, whips, and one very hungry giant cat. These five Christmas customs aren’t sweet—they’re straight-up nightmare fuel.
Krampus — The Christmas Demon Who Steals Children

Forget Santa’s naughty list. In Alpine folklore, Krampus is a horned, fur-covered demon who accompanies St. Nicholas on the night of December 5. While St. Nick rewards good children, Krampus handles the bad ones—and by “handles,” we mean he stuffs them into a sack or a basket on his back and drags them to hell. He carries chains, bells, and a bundle of birch branches to whip the naughty. In some depictions, he has one cloven hoof and a long, flicking tongue. The tradition is still actively celebrated in Austria, Germany, and parts of Eastern Europe, where men dress up as Krampus and roam the streets at night. In 2023, a Krampus event in Austria drew hundreds of costumed participants. It’s considered family fun.
