The Superga Air Disaster — The Team That Vanished (1949)

On May 4, 1949, a plane carrying the entire Torino football team crashed into the Basilica of Superga on a foggy hill above Turin. All 31 people on board were killed, including the squad that had won four consecutive Serie A titles and was on the verge of a fifth. The team, known as Il Grande Torino, was one of the strongest in the world at the time. The crash destroyed an entire generation of Italian football talent. Two days later, half a million people lined the streets of Turin for the funerals. Torino was awarded the Serie A title at the request of their rivals. Only fate could beat them, it was said. They became the Immortals.
