6 Criminals Who Were Betrayed By Their Own Pets

You can lie to the police. You can lie to your family. You can even lie to yourself. But you can’t lie to your dog. Or your cat. Or your parrot. Or, apparently, your pet raccoon. These six criminals all learned the hard way that the animal sleeping at the foot of your bed is not your alibi—it’s a witness. And some of them are very, very talkative.

Titan the Labradoodle — The Dog Who Stayed With The Body

Derek Daigneault shot his cousin Mandy Rose Reynolds in the head, stuffed her body into a plastic storage bin, drove her to a field in Robinson, Texas, and set her on fire. He thought he’d covered his tracks. He didn’t account for Titan. The loyal Labradoodle stayed by the burning body all night, barking at officers and refusing to leave the scene. The next morning, a neighbour found Titan sitting in the exact spot where Reynolds’ remains were discovered. Thanks to the dog’s microchip, police identified Reynolds and traced her back to Daigneault. Surveillance footage later showed Titan’s head peeking out of the car window as Daigneault drove away from Walmart, where he’d bought the bin, shovel, and gas can. He was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison. A jury took just 30 minutes to convict him.
